A review of the movie “Disconnect”

A brief introduction of what the movie is about: The film explores how people experience the negative sides of communication we have in modern day, we follow three different stories in the movie.

My own opinion about the issues presented in the movie: The three different stories were all about different ways of “issues we have in modern technology”. One story is about two boys who started a joke towards a lonely boy named Ben Boyd, it was all meant as a joke but it ended with Ben trying to commit suicide. Another of the stories is about two people (a couple) that is drifting more and more apart from each other. The man is gambling away all his money on his job and the woman is talking to another guy and ending up giving away their credit card information and other important personal info. The third story is about a 17-year-old boy who is being used to have “private shows” which is basically underage pornography.

My opinion is that you HAVE to be careful of what choices you make when you are interaction on the internet, never give away you information and try not to make a choice that has stupid consequences.

Can I relate to any of this? Throughout the whole film, everyone is on the internet all the time, this is something I could related to since most people are always or at least almost always not far from their phones, computers or tablets. Maybe more than what is healthy.

Did I like the film? Yes, I did absolutely because I feel it represents very well how things could end up and how things are many places, how far a simple joke can go and thus turn into something far more serious. I feel like the film described quite well how the modern day society is and how people use the web.

Which part of it made the most impression on me? I think the part with Ben made the most impression on me, he was a lonely kid who just wanted friends, when the other two boys made up “Jessica” just to get him to “trust her” and then exposing everything of him felt so mean. It may just have started out as a bad joke but it ended with Boyd hanging himself. When you watch the movie you kind of feel sorry for him.

The movie is quite depressing but I do think in the end that it is a good movie and it should be watched
